Nutrition is about people eating or drinking. More precisely, it is about taking in nutrients. These are substances that are needed to live. The body gets energy from them, it grows and renews itself. Food, on the other hand, is what someone eats or drinks.
Not only people eat food, but also animals and plants. Animals can be divided into three groups: Herbivores such as cattle, carnivores such as lions and omnivores such as humans. Everything that lives needs food: even bacteria have to eat something. Plants get their nutrients from their roots.
Food is an important part of the economy: many people earn their money by producing food. This branch is called agriculture. Others sell food. This includes trade, shops, street vendors and many others.
Eating and drinking is also part of culture: what you eat and how you eat can vary from person to person, from country to country or from people to people. France is known for its soft cheese, Italy for its spaghetti and so on.
Doctors need to know a lot about nutrition. Certain types of diet can lead to disease. Some people cannot eat certain things because their body cannot tolerate them. This may be because of an allergy. Certain foods are toxic to humans, but certain animals can eat them. Some people also restrict themselves voluntarily: Vegetarians do not eat meat or fish, vegans do not eat eggs either. They also do not drink milk or eat anything made from it, such as cheese or yoghurt.
Many poor people cannot afford enough food. Those who eat or can eat too little are undernourished. This affects about one in nine people in the world. Malnutrition is especially bad for children because they do not grow properly. Those who are malnourished suffer from hunger. Many other people get their bellies full, but often only with rice, for example. This is very one-sided and these people then lack many vitamins. This one-sided diet is also called malnutrition.
